Farewell

“You’re joking. You are just going to pick up and leave? Did you even plan on breaking up with me?” Summer shook her head and crossed her arms tightly in front of her chest.

Lucas tried to find the right words but he felt as if he was already buried alive. “Everything has been going so well lately and I feel like things are getting pretty serious. I just want to travel some and figure a few things out on my own.”

“You always do this Lucas. The moment you realize you have let someone in, you push them away. You toss in the towel and take off. We have been together for two years. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?” She shuffled her feet, unable to keep still. She wanted to pace around the living room and to slap him across the face. Anything to make him realize what he was doing.

It was remarkable she hadn’t raised her voice, but she knew how Lucas would react if she did. He didn’t like raised voices. He always said, “People raise their voices when they realize they have been defeated, but are not willing to quit fighting. It is the last-ditch effort to force the point down someones throat, because if they were given one chaotic free moment to about it, the invalidity would be obvious.”

“Yes it does Summer. I just need some time to think. I will come back to you. I promise.” He swallowed hard. She knew him too well. He had to leave.

Lucas slid the strap of his bag around his shoulder and left. He didn’t glance back to see her beautiful eyes one last time. He knew all he would see were tears and pain. Both of which were caused by him, and that weight would be too much for him to bear. His lower jaw trembled and he had to blink furiously to keep the tears from slipping silently down his cheeks. It didn’t work. The tears came anyway.

So true. This is great, Scott. Keep it up!
