Charles took the stairs to the second floor leaving a trail of rain water behind him. He was drenched but he didn’t care, his mind was else ware. The door to his apartment squealed when it opened, notifying his wife of his arrival. Charles slipped his soaked shoes and socks off by the door before continuing to the bathroom to discard the rest of his clothes. He wore nothing but his striped boxers when his wife entered.
She touched his shoulder and recoiled from how cold he felt.
“Babe, you are freezing.” Charles focused his attention on the hot water streaming from the faucet. He filled his hands and splashed his face. “Babe?” The worry in her voice was unmistakable. He splashed another handful of hot water in his face then turned to her. His raised his hand till it kissed the soft skin of her neck. The tips of his fingers then curled around the back of her neck while his thumb stroked her cheek.
Charles reigned in the emotions swirling like a storm inside of him. Anything he would say could unleash the feelings inside of him so instead he swallowed and bit his tongue.
“You found out didn’t you?” They were indeed a perfect fit. His head made the barest of nods. Charles wife plunged her face into his chest and wrapped her arms around him. Her nails dug into the bare skin on his back, but he didn’t care. He just stood there enjoying the warmth of her against his cold damp body. There was never anyone who felt more right in his arms then she did.
Charles cradled her in his arms as she cried and kissed the top of her head. Eventually her sobs subsided and she looked up at him. Most couples would have needed words but not them. He understood everything she wanted to tell him by gazing into her eyes and she could see the storm inside of him begin to dwindle. She raised herself up on her toes and kissed his rough lips. After a moment, she felt him kissing her back.
He hadn’t forgiven her yet, but he still loved her, and that meant more to her then anything. She pulled herself into his chest once again and held him tightly. She felt him pull away slightly as he slid her legs out from under her. She leaned into him and threw her arms around his neck as he carried her away.
