Last Words

Daniel once believed he had everything figured out, but now as he stood over the grave of his mother he realized how wrong he was. In movies a persons last words are always remembered whether they are harsh or loving, wise or confusing. In reality though, that is far from the truth. Daniel tried to remember the last words he had said to his mother. He couldn’t. It was not a Hallmark moment nor did he feel a sense of dread fill him as he walked away. That had been three months ago when he said goodbye.

Daniel had moved away and was lost in the unrelenting hustle of starting a new life in New York under the false belief the life he left behind would be the same when he returned. It wasn’t. Not once did he call home to see how she was doing. Not once did he take a breath from his life to care about the people he valued the most. Now he stood over the grave of the person he loved the most, and he couldn’t think of the last words he had said to her. They must have been I love you, but the possibility of them being something else hurt him deeply and was beginning to drive him mad.
