She stood at the edge of the road, watching headlights grow closer and closer forming twin orbs of brilliant blinding white. Then they would pass by and red was all that was left. The red of tail lights, as if a sheer veil of blood was draped over the world. The red veil would peel away from the world just as quickly as it came. Everything had turned back to black. The world was dreary again, no light, no blood just unforgiving darkness.
The tall raven haired girl took two steps out into the road, placing her directly between white and yellow lines and stopped. She twisted her head from left to right while she waited in the middle of the road. Such an easy thing to do, she thought. Life could be taken as easily as snuffing out a match in an ocean. In the distance she saw two orbs draw back the curtains of night. She took a step forward.
A motorcycle roared past her causing her to freeze in place. After a second she shuddered from the cocktail of adrenaline and fear now coursing through her veins. She hurried to the opposite side of the street and walked along the half lit sidewalk. Lines and cracks in the concrete slid past her like black spider webs. Slowly at first, then faster and faster. Her heart was beating quick now and her breath was creating small clouds when she exhaled.
She listened to the rhythmic footfalls of her running shoes breaking the silence of the night. The sound of passing cars disturbed her every few minutes but their intrusion was only momentary.
